Arch 602 – Infill Housing for Bryan, TX

For this project, the studio was tasked with creating infill housing for a neighborhood alley in Bryan, TX. The existing alley sits behind the backyards of typical lots in Bryan, but it severely underutilized in its current state; the lot effectively serves as an informal extension of the yards of current residences, without adding any value other than space.

For our solutions, we were able to design any housing typologies that we wished, from single family homes to low-rise apartments. Given that Bryan has a housing shortage (along with the rest of Texas) and that there is a lack of affordable housing (along with the rest of the planet), I chose to develop a repeatable and modular condo style housing type. This typology would address housing density, affordability, yet would respect the surrounding neighborhood’s current character; while an apartment complex would be the most effective at solving the problems of housing, it would be too offensive and confrontational to its site context, and so the condo is a happy compromise.
